Direct
and expressive, monotype joins the radiant qualities of prints with
the spontaneity of painting including the beauty of watercolor washes.
Monoprint allows for a permanent repeatable element combined with
one-of-a-kind effects. Explore the sequential possibilities of monotype
to develop your image conceptually and formally.
Goodman demonstrates her image-making methods with black and color
printing ink, ink modifiers, various drawing, painting and print
tools, paper handling, single-and multi-pass printing procedures,
hand coloring, chine colle and the development of "ghost"
imagery through successive printing states. If participants choose
to work in monoprint, a matrix form of printmaking such as drypoint
will be explored in combination with monotype. Ferric chloride non-toxic
etching and aquatint may be presented instead if in demand. All
techniques may not be covered in one session -- it will depend on
class dynamics. Individual and group critique as time allows. Additional
open lab time available by arrangement. All levels welcome.
The latest waterbased inks will be used in the afternoon class.
Combined class will use water-soluble oil-based inks -- new ones
that clean up with water, although oil-based etching and litho inks
will be allowed. Health-conscious habits always stress minimal exposure
to inks and solvent in all classes. Lab fee includes use of tarletan,
inks and modifiers, mordants, solvents and some plastic monotype
plates. Students supply own brushes, paper, and metal plates, etc.
