Il Bisonte: The Stamperia and School
Since its founding in 1959 by Maria Luigi Guaita, the "Stamperia" or
print workshop collaborated with renowned artists including Henry Moore,
Picasso, Lipchitz, Matta, Tamayo, Nathan Oliveira and Giò Pomodoro.
The workshop's impressive print collection is available for viewing,
as well as rotating shows in its gallery.
The School, founded in 1983, is located in the impressive former stables
of the Palazzo Serristori on the Arno River's "left bank." This neighborhood
of San Niccolò in the historic heart of the old center of Florence
close to the Pitti Palace, Uffizzi, Ponte Vecchio, Santa Croce Church,
and the Piazzale Michelangelo is filled with artisans' workshop
and characteristic atmosphere. Short walks lead to the important sights
in town.

•Single-run monotype emphasizing painterly
methods. Paint and draw on the surface of metal and plastic plates
and then take an impression onto beautiful print paper by running your
plate through an etching press under immense pressure to achieve brilliant
colors and crisp printerly effects. Goodman demonstrates her techniques
for using the latest non-toxic waterbased inks, modifiers and rollers
with color printing. (Some oil-based inks may be used where appropriate.)
•Chine
collé, which is a collage process of adhering papers while simultaneously
printing on them, combines beautiful visuals with textured paper, photographic

about my work but also instructional to listen and participate in discussion
about the work of the other participants."

"Linda, you have ruined me for all my other teachers: how to look
at a total print. How to take the ghost or rather allow the ghost to
take you somewhere you didn't know you were going. I learned so much,
it's going to take a long time to process it all"
— Martha K, Portland, Oregon
"The workshop was great it was life changing."
— Ric H., Quincy, MA"
I loved being a visitor rather than a tourist. It was wonderful to live
in Florence..., to have a life there, a neighborhood, an apartment and
the structure of the printmaking workshop around which to plan my time."
—Cathy S. Seattle, Washington
"Every time I closed my eyes I saw art ideas! I would recommend this

of the planet, our art emerged from the other side of our minds. The
flip side, the shiny side, the new side. Take a risk on yourself and
take this class!"
—Trisha G., Sunnyvale, CA
"I have enjoyed this workshop. Linda is able to explain various techniques
clearly and intelligently and spiritedly. Her critiques were particularly
strong. She is able to talk about process, where one’s strengths
are and give leads to new approaches. She encouraged me to broaden my
style and I think it will have lasting consequences."
—Mary Ann P., Evanston, Illinois
"Linda Goodman's workshop was about learning to live in Italy as much
as it was about printmaking. She is a gifted teacher with regard to
both."

Some
thoughts on the workshop:
This week before class starts especially is an opportunity for experienced
artists and beginners alike to take a personal artistic journey in
Florence. Writers and photographers, scrapbook junkies or those just
interested, people participating in Artist Way groups can consider
this their artist's date and enjoy themselves creating a personal
record or diary or scrapbook of their journey while touring Florence
or other Italian cities on their own. Suspend judgement and just enjoy
yourself. Find creativity you may not have known existed, unblock
your creative engine or simply expand upon what you are doing now.
This will affect you -- as the sights, sounds and aromas of Florence
and Tuscany will linger with you when you return home. Explore, expound
and experiment in Florence Italy! |
